Super Bowl LV: Tom Brady Just Beat Patrick Mahomes On This Key Stat

A pair of quarterbacks at opposite ends of their careers square off Sunday in Super Bowl LV, a championship the media is already gushing will be a “battle for the ages.”

On one side will be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and 43-year-old Tom Brady, the four-time Super Bowl MVP playing in a record-setting 10th Big Game — and his first without the New England Patriots. On the other, 25-year-old Patrick Mahomes, who will be gunning to deliver a second straight title for the Kansas City Chiefs.

It could go either way (Vegas has the Chiefs as three point favorites). The two passing legends have split their previous four matchups, the most recent going to Mahomes and the Chiefs, who beat the Bucs 27-24 in Week 12 of the 2020 NFL season. Prowess in grueling nail biters like that coupled with unrivaled dominance against less formidable foes, has made the two passers the game’s most marketable players.

For Mahomes, that’s meant national sponsorships with Adidas, Oakley, Head & Shoulders, State Farm, Bose, DirecTV, Essentia Water and Electronic Arts even before he won the Super Bowl last February. With a full plate of endorsements, Mahomes passed on dozens of offers after the Super Bowl win. One exception: he signed a multi-year deal with emerging nutrition brand BioSteel Sports Nutrition, eschewing any cash and taking an undisclosed equity stake.

Brady has always been selective with his off-field partners and is currently tied to Under Armour, IWC, Wheels Up, Christopher Cloos and Fanatics. His TB12 brand, which launched in 2013 with his trainer and business partner, Alex Guerrero, and is named for his jersey number, sells apparel, supplements, training accessories and operates three training facilities (Boston, Foxboro and Tampa). Last year, he signed his latest endorsement deal with Danish eyewear brand Cloos, whose line of Brady glasses have become the upstart company’s fastest-growing line.

Here’s how the GOAT and the kid stack up.

Mahomes had the highest sales of NFL licensed merchandise for the 2019 season, while Brady ranked No. 2. Brady’s move to Tampa set off a bevy of sales, but he still trailed Mahomes to start 2020. Yet, the most recent NFL Players Association sales rankings released Friday nudged Brady ahead of Mahomes.

Brady is the fourth QB to play on two different Super Bowl franchises, joining Craig Morton, Kurt Warner and Peyton Manning.

Mahomes was the tenth overall pick in the 2017 NFL draft. Brady was famously picked in the sixth round, as the 199th pick in the 2000 draft and chosen after six other QBs. In a nod to his draft selection, Brady launched 199 Productions last year to pursue film and TV projects.

Tompa Tom—the QB tried trademarking the phrase in 2020—is 43 years old but looks closer to 23. Brady topped grizzled chain-smoking George Blanda last month as the oldest person to throw a touchdown pass in the playoffs. The internet had a field day comparing the two visages when NBC posted a graphic on the feat.

Brady is namechecked in at least 80 songs, according to music licensor LyricFind, such as Joe Budden’s Get No Younger with the line: “How am I gonna lose with Tom Brady in the pocket.” Mahomes’ eight references are likely to climb in the years ahead. One example from Big K.R.I.T.’s Kickoff is, “Mahomes second with a ring now (ring now).”

Mahomes’ career passing rating is the highest in NFL history. Brady ranks seventh at 97.3.

The Chiefs QB is the Super Bowl MVP favorite, with bettors required to put up $120 to win $100. Brady is next in line at +190. Quarterbacks have won the award in eight of the past 10 years.
