Singer/songwriter Daniel Johnston tops Billboard & Clio’s Top TV Commercials chart, powered by Shazam, for June, with "Story of An Artist," thanks to the song’s appearance in Apple’s “Behind The Mac” commercial.
Using tagging data from Shazam, as well as sales and streaming information tracked by Nielsen Music, Billboard partners with Clio Music each month to present a chart ranking the top songs in commercials. Rankings exclude any song that has recently charted within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 or top 10 on a genre chart.
Johnston earns his first No. 1 on any Billboard chart, as the track leads all songs with 85,000 Shazam tags, 2,000 downloads sold and 420,000 U.S. streams in June, according to Nielsen Music.
The track previously hit No. 1 on LyricFind’s U.S. chart for one week (chart dated July 7) and No. 3 on the LyricFind Global chart (dated June 30).
Just below Johnston, Childish Gambino’s “Redbone” debuts at No. 2 thanks to its appearance in Apple iPhone’s “Animoji: Alien” ad.
The single, which hit No. 2 on the Hot R&B Songs chart and No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 last summer, earns its placement with 7,000 Shazam tags, 10,000 downloads sold and 24.8 million U.S. streams in June.
Finally, David Bowie’s “Starman” debuts at No. 3, following its feature in Chanel’s “Parfum” commercial.
The classic hit, which peaked at No. 65 on the Hot 100 in August 1972, tallied 37,000 Shazam tags, 6,000 downloads sold and 2 million U.S. streams.
